What gear is DeadMau5 using?

Posted 04 May 2008 in Events,Gear,Images,News,Reviews,Videos

UPDATE: I took some pictures of Deadmau5′s new setup at Lollapalooza 2011. Check out the new gear he is using. He was mostly using the Traktor X1 controller to the right of the 24 channel Presonus mixing console. He is most certainly playing patches from his analog synths, that takes some serious balls.

Older Article from years past

I had the pleasure to help Joel Zimmerman, aka DeadMau5, setup his gear not once but two times at the Austin Electronic Music Festival.

DeadMau5 uses a very unique setup. He’s running Abelton Live on a 17″ MacBook Pro ($2-3k) outputting to an Apoge Ensemble ($2k) soundcard. He’s using a 16×16 (256) Monome controller ($800) for what I’m not totally sure and a touch screen Lemur ($3k) made by Jazz Mutant to control his effects. He’s running 4 stereo outs from his Ensemble to whatever club mixer is at hand, in our case, a Pioneer DJM-800($1600) which was also setup with a Pioneer EFX-1000 ($800).  On his latest tour, he was using a Allen & Heath Xone 4D. As far as I could tell, he used everything that he brought and used it well.

the songs i usually like is made by deadmau5,dirty south, buzzmania, klaas and horny united.

i like futuristic dirty electro, vintage nintendo sounds thats twisted,i wanna play dirty modern electro.

Is a way of building a custom Monome?!?! a tut or sumethin is apprecialbe =)

    remove NO & SPAM =)

  9. mike (14 Sep 2009, 7:33)

lol, dont sell your car man. check the subfocus tutorials on youtube, check the equipment he’s using. get a cheap copy of fruity loops or the cheapest copy of cubase (le, se, something like that) and NI massive or rob papens albino. theres enough there to focus on for the next 3-5 years. programming synths is the way forward.

try a demo of fruity, check out the demo songs.

Thanks for your reply. I forgot about this post and went to a digital dj/studio/keyboard store in Oslo and they were very helpful. They had EVERYTHING. i mean, even if you want to have the setup of røyksopp they would have it. I am now gonna buy a cheap akai keyboard and a FL studio edition. FL advertizes that deadmau5 is using their software. but ofcourse he is using many more things. FL studio+akai seems like a good start for me, i didnt want to spend much as i am just experimenting untill i get the hang of it. Much thanks for your help and make some killer songs!
Ive started following Jean Elan and wolfgang, fuck me sideways. Jean elan’s remix of “the girl and the robot” song by røyksopp is by faar the best remix out there. I wish deadmau5 would take some E and remix røyksopp music. His teamup songs with the american dj”cant remember the name right now” made his songs so damn mellow and Boring. Its nothing like Hi friend, ghosts n stuff. Oh, guys wolfgang Beats are awesome, i hope he steps into the remixing like jean elan does.. i like røyksopp songs, the songs are “begging” to be remixed with a awesome dirrty beat! Oh, i found this link on youtube. you should follow his monthly electro list. i think its “top 10 electro” then by month. the link picture is a rainbow i love electro. He catches many good songs in his unloads, he blends shit but its only the songs. there are 1-2good ones in the top 10 every month so get em! he also puts track list. so you can always download them from the internet. =))

  16. Barney (22 Aug 2010, 6:21)

This is bull, deadmau5 would not touch a mac if his was paid to!

True. When I first wrote this article in 2008, maschine was just a twinkle in NI’s eye. I probably need to write up the article of what he’s using now on his new tour.

  23. HoloDesk (14 Oct 2011, 7:51)

Good piece of kit but the only thing is nowadays there is no need for the Lemur as it can all be done with a £400 iPad adhoc networked to a Macbook and running TouchOSC app. Thank you Steve Jobs! Legend!
